A Busy Day in Rotorua

Rotorura is a geothermal hotspot – reputed to be one of the most active areas in the world.  It is quite touristy but not nearly as commercial as a similar spot would be in North America.

Hearing the rain overnight, I wondered what we would do.  When we were on the dinner cruise, in the Bay of Islands, there was sheep farmer I got talking to.  I asked him the best place to see Sheep Shearing and he said the Agrodome in Rotorura.  By the time we finished breakfast it was sunny so we went to the Agrodome.  It was a great show and because summer is over, wasn’t very crowded.

After that we went to the Rotorua Museum.  We were glad we had gone to see the Maori display at the Auckland Museum as it was much more extensive than that which we saw here.  The Rotorua Museum was more a museum of the history of the area, including the Maori.

In the evening we went to a Maori Hangi and Cultural Performance.  It was similar to a Hawaiian Luau.  It was very good but Lois was almost done in at the end of the evening.  We had been picked up at our B and B and at the end of the meal we thought we were being directed to our shuttle bus back.  Instead we were taken on a “Bush Walk” in the dark.  We did see glowworms and Lois did survive.

We returned to our B and B both quite tired.
